How to Disable Access to Windows Registry for Standard Account?

 The Windows Registry is a kind of database that saves the low-level settings of the OS and apps. It has values and keys that are duplicates of the files and folders. Moreover, applying an incorrect setup into the Registry Editor can cause issues with the PC. Thus, the administrator should turn off the Registry Editor access for default users who don’t know much about registries. Disable Access of Registry via the Local Group Policy Editor

  1. Hit the Windows and R combination over the keyboard to launch the run prompt.
  2. Afterward, input “gpedit.msc” in it and select the OK button to invoke the Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Now, pick the Yes button when prompted by the UAC.
  4. Go to the window of User Configuration, and then go to the following path: User Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ System\
  5. You should select the “Prevent access to registry editing tools” option and twice click on it.
  6. Finally, switch the option from Not Configured to Enabled, then click on the Yes button.
  7. Then hit the OK and Apply button to apply the changes, and it will turn off the Registry for the particular user account.


Disable Access to Registry via the Registry Editor

  1. Hit the Windows and R combination over the keyboard to launch the run pop-up.
  2. Thereafter, input ‘regedit’ in it, and select the OK button to launch the Registry Editor.
  3. Then pick the Yes button in the window of User Account Control.
  4. Once you get to the Current User Hive, go to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
  5. In case you are unable to see the System key beneath the Policies section, go to the Policies key and right-click on it.
  6. After that, select the ‘New’ option and then click on the Key button.
  7. Once you reach the System key, reach the right panel, and right-click on it, then pick the ‘New’ option.
  8. You should click on the option of ‘DWORD (32-bit) Value.’
  9. Once you get the newly made value, twice click on it.
  10.  Modify the value data to 2, and Base to Decimal.
  11. Now, ensure to reboot the PC to save the changes.

Disable Access of Registry via the Third-Party App

  1. Open the web browser, and download the app ‘Protect My Folders.’
  2. You should install it by following the on-screen steps.
  3. Launch it and select the option of Lock or Add.
  4. After that, reach the key of the ‘regedit.exe’ and select the button of Add: C:\Windows\regedit.exe
  5. Click on OK.
