Forget everything; you should at least be glad that the film is indeed arriving on Christmas Day. Yes, finally, Wonder Woman 1984 is all set to be released.
After months of speculation, Warner Bros. has finally announced
that the Patty Jenkins movie will arrive on HBO Max on December the 25th, the
same day it will debut in the domestic theaters. Those countries that
cannot provide access to HBO Max will be eligible for a release a week before,
i.e., on December the 16th. The exciting thing is that the film will be
available on HBO Max for absolutely free.
Ann Sarnoff, head of the Warner Media Studios, has made a
comment in which she has stressed the fact that to survive in these turbulent
times, the industry needs to be creative. She alluded towards a vital point
that, along with keeping everyone safe, the industry also needs to think about
serving fans.
She added that the film is quite amazing, and it needs a proper
theater experience to ooze out its magic. To achieve a healthy and sound
theater availability, Warner Media Studio is working very closely with the
exhibitors to provide that option of theaters to the cinephiles who live in
those areas where theaters are currently functioning.
It looks like Warner Bros. has learned from its “Tenet” mistakes
and is keeping an option of OTT platform alive as well. Ann Sarnoff remarked
that in her statement and said that to include the consumers who simply cannot
go to a movie theater. They have included an HBO Max option as well.
The plan to include the OTT platform in the mix is a surprise
for some fans as they were expecting the film to stick to its traditional
release plan as it had undergone delay after delay. We have to acknowledge that
it has been a long wait for the fans who haven’t had a single DCEU film since
the release of the 2019 film Shazam. The other reason why the move has
surprised so many people is that the Gal Gadot starrer was considered a
tentpole, and some critics had even projected the film to surpass $1billion.
However, we should stand and applaud the tenacity shown by
Warner Bros., who have stood tall for two big-budgeted films while the others
have already postponed their projects to the next year.
The CEO of Warner Media, Jason Kilar, has reiterated Warner
Media’s continued support towards the exhibition community. In the statement,
he mentioned that the studio believes in the potential of theaters because
billions of fans around the globe love going to the theaters. He added that as
long as there is a demand for the movies in the market, Warner Media Studio
will be there to meet them.
Warner Bros. has shown tremendous courage with Tenet, which can
be considered a moderate success as it has already surpassed $300 million
worldwide. It can be argued that under normal circumstances, the film would
have easily crossed $800 million or even $1 billion.
