Josh Boone shared
that directing The Fault in Our Stars is different from the film New Mutants as
the two stories and genres are very different from each other. The Fault in Our
Stars is a film about two teenagers who fell in love with a cancer support group,
which New Mutants is the long-running Fox’s X-Men franchise film. The Fault in
Our Stars was released in 2014, and the New Mutants released last month.
Josh Boone is an American director known for his projects like
The Fault in Our Stars, which was based on the novel of the same name and
released in 2014. He also directed the romantic comedy titled Stuck in Love in
2012, and his latest project is the superhero horror movie The New Mutants.
Boone made his first debut film in 2012. He wrote and directed the romantic
comedy Stuck in Love. The film premiered at Toronto International Film Festival
and was released in the United States in 2013. Boone mostly received positive
praise for the project. He won numerous awards and positive reviews for
directing The Fault in Our Stars. In 2013, Boone announced that he is working
on the adaptation of the novel Lisey’s Story, written by the horror king,
Stephen King, but he dropped out of the project. He closed his deal with 20th
Century Fox to direct and co-write the next sequel from X-Men franchise The New
Mutants on 13 May 2015.
The New Mutants is an American horror movie in the superhero
genre; it is based on the novel of the same name distributed by 20th Century
studios. The movie is said to be the last installment of the franchise. The
film’s casts were some good bunch of actors, including Anya Taylor, Maisie
Williams, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Henry Zaga, and Blu Hunt. The New
Mutants released on 28 August 2020 in the United States. Although the film
received mixed reviews from critics, some called it “so-so,” “middling,” while
others gave it a “perfectly fine” tag. The plot revolves around Dani, who is a
young Native American escaping the destruction during a tornado. Williams, her
father, hides Dalli, and an unseen entity kills him. When Dalli wakes up in the
hospital, Dr. Cecilia Reyes tells her that she is a mutant. And she is
introduced to four other teenagers.
However, the film has faced a struggle for theatrical release
from the beginning. The movie went through many reshuffling and rescheduling,
and the original New Mutants screenplay is very different from the final draft.
The reviewers were criticizing the delays and the inconsistent tone.
Recently, in an interview with BBC, director Josh Boone was
asked about the experience of New Mutants in comparison to The Fault in Our
Stars. To which Boone replied, “That was blessed circumstances, and this was
like the opposite.” He expressed his disappointment as there were lots of bumps
during the process. He also shared that the budget of the movie was also a
significant issue in the production. Boone initially thought the New Mutants’
world would be interconnected with the X-Men, but the limited budget forced him
to cut the dream film in half; he added the film was a learning process, and he
will choose his next projects wisely.
New Mutants did not get much appreciation in the box office, but
it will still be a treat to die-hard Marvel fans. The film has nothing
interesting to serve as a whole, but the introduction sequence of the
characters such as Cannonball, Magik, and Sunspot is a fun part to watch. The
audiences will agree that Boone’s The Fault in Our Stars was a better project
than Marvel’s New Mutants, and the failure of the film is not Boone’s fault.
